Volumes six and seven contain a full transcript, with translation, of the important mediaeval accounts of the Reading merchant gild. The accounts record in rich detail the gild’s income from rents, fines and admission fees, and its expenditure on stipends and wages, lawsuits, the cleaning and repair of town buildings and other amenities, public entertainments, and hospitality provided for important visitors. They also shed valuable light on the town’s relations with the abbey.
